Marc Dann’s Wife Charged With Misdemeanor

April 21st, 2010 Matt View Comments

From James Nash in The Columbus Dispatch:

With just three weeks remaining to bring misdemeanor charges against former Attorney General Marc Dann, prosecutors have charged his estranged wife with improperly using her influence to secure a grant for the university where she teaches journalism.

Alyssa Lenhoff, 47, who filed for divorce from Dann last week, is expected to plead guilty Monday to a single misdemeanor charge of having an unlawful interest in a public contract.

Prosecutors say Lenhoff, who directs the journalism program at Youngstown State University, misused her relationship with Dann to secure a $6,500 grant from the attorney general’s office in 2007 to teach a class on unsolved crimes. Lenhoff was close to Dann’s chief of staff, Edgar C. Simpson, who agreed to cooperate with prosecutors as part of a plea deal he struck in March. The two had worked together at a newspaper in Warren.

Marc could have charges filed against him soon. I wonder if prosecutors would perhaps drop Lenhoff’s charge if she cooperates with investigators?

What is Mrs. Marc Dann Going to Do?

From the Youngstown Vindicator:

Alyssa Lenhoff, wife of disgraced ex-Ohio attorney general Marc Dann, will be invited — if she hasn’t already been — to play Let’s Make a Deal by Franklin County Prosecutor Ron O’Brien. It’s standard operating procedure. Prosecutors hook the big fish by first luring the little ones.

In the Dann case, which has been in the investigative hopper for more than a year, the former attorney general is Mr. Big. The others, including his wife, are a way of getting to him.

Already, three individuals who were part of the Dann cabal in Columbus have pleaded guilty to various charges and are cooperating with the prosecutor. Of course, it comes as no surprise that Leo Jennings, Anthony Gutierrez and Edgar Simpson are reportedly singing like canaries. There is no honor among Mahoning Valley’s thieves.

Now, it’s Lenhoff’s turn. To be sure, a wife cannot be forced to testify against her husband. But she certainly can do so voluntarily.[...]

After my blog filled up a number of pages of the Inspector General’s report on this situation, this story fell off my radar screen entirely. Dann wrote a number of fairly interesting op-eds about the housing market and I thought that after resigning and getting a $1000 slap on the wrist from the ethics commission that things were looking up for Dann. Wow as I wrong!

Now, union thug Leo Jennings and Edgar Simpson were back in the news and pleading guilty ethics charges. And when Dann resigned, plenty of questions were left unanswered about money from his campaign transition fund and campaign account that was used for personal reasons. Rumors range from using the money to buy furniture for their condo/love-palace (furniture which was later sold) to whispers about drugs.

Alyssa seems to have a nice gig at Youngstown State University and she runs what appears to be a profitable “fiesta dinnerware” company. But considering she didn’t divorce him after learning how his adultery, perhaps she will protect her husband?
