Buckeye Firearms Association Endorses Josh Mandel and Jon Husted

July 15th, 2010 Matt View Comments

And we are reminded that two Democrats on the state-wide ticket we part of Columbus’ unfortunate “assault” weapons ban.

From their endorsement of Josh Mandel:

Mandel’s opponent this fall, Kevin Boyce, supported Columbus’ so-called “assault” weapon ban when he was a city councilman. The now defunct gun ban, better known in pro-gun circles as the Mentel Ban, named after its primary sponsor, the constitutionally-challenged Mike Mentel, cost the City of Columbus an estimated $20 million of lost convention revenue when the NRA canceled plans to host its Annual Meeting in the city. In addition to all the other damage, various gun bans have cost the city at least $140,000 in legal fees after they could not defend their unconstitutional laws in court. Ohio can not afford that sort of reckless action from our State Treasurer.

And their endorsement of Jon Husted:

Husted’s opponent this fall, Maryellen O’Shaughnessy, was part of a Columbus city council that passed a so-called assault weapons ban only five days after the veto override on HB347. She clearly stands on the opposite side of the gun debate from Jon Husted and has appeared on television shows promoting anti-gun and unconstitutional laws. We should demand that all elected officials honor and obey our laws.

Gov. Ted Strickland is apparently such a staunch defender of your 2nd Amendment freedoms that it’s nice to know he will be voting for Josh and Jon in November.

Treasurer Kevin Boyce’s Campaign Manager QUITS

July 12th, 2010 Matt View Comments

And Team Mandel sends out an appropriate response:

Effective today, Treasurer Kevin Boyce’s Campaign Manager has quit the Boyce campaign. Marquez Brown’s departure comes in the wake of numerous news stories and editorials outlining growing cronyism, pay-to-play and ethics problems in Boyce’s office.

Brown follows in a long line of Boyce staffers who have left Boyce over the past year, including his Chief of Staff, Executive Assistant, Communications Director, Regional Outreach Director and Fundraising Director. Democratic operatives remain consistent in explaining that this mass exodus from Boyce’s operation is due to his poor management skills, inability to understand the office, arrogance and growing ethics problems.

Brown is also the Public Policy Coordinator at Lorain County Community College.

The Word “Mosque” & And Chris Redfern is a Bigot

July 8th, 2010 Matt View Comments

The Ohio Democrat Party communication office has been shopping around this story for months… Apparently, since Treasurer Kevin Boyce, who has made corrupt deals with banks and investment brokers in exchange for campaign contribution, the solution is to scream racism!:

Race and religion are creeping into an increasingly contentious treasurer’s race between Democrat state Treasurer Kevin L. Boyce and his Republican challenger, state Rep. Josh Mandel.

The latest charges came from Democratic Chairman Chris Redfern, who called Mandel “a chameleon” who has developed questionable relationships with ultra-conservative politicians, talk-show hosts, bloggers and “birthers,” some of whom have made comments with racist and anti-Islamic overtones.

“Josh is using religion to weaken his political opponent instead of talking about his beliefs,” Redfern told The Dispatch. “At his very core he wants to divide us.”[...]

Mandel, 32, a second-term legislator from Lyndhurst, is white and Jewish. Boyce, 38, a former Columbus city councilman, is African-American and Christian. Amer Ahmad, his right-hand man in the treasurer’s office, is Muslim. (Boyce’s campaign deferred to Redfern to comment.)

The issue came to a head recently when Mandel’s campaign accused Boyce of “cronyism and corruption” because he awarded a $32 million, low-bid state investment contract to a Boston firm whose new lobbyist, Noure Alo, is friends with Ahmad, Boyce’s deputy treasurer and chief financial officer. Boyce also hired Alo’s wife, Walaa Waeda, as a receptionist.

Mandel then upped the ante, using the resulting news stories as a fundraising tool on his campaign website. In a short note to supporters on his blog, Mandel used the word mosque three times in talking about Boyce’s office.

The sad thing here is that the one screaming racist is the real racist… Redfern is playing into potential concerns about Josh Mandel’s conservative Jewish faith and promoting wild stereotypes of all Jews hating blacks and Muhammadists.

The truth is that the job opening for Boyce’s friend was ONLY announced at a mosque… not a church, a synagogue, an evening poker game but at a mosque. Just because this happens means that Mandel is prohibited from uttering the one word?

Redfern, who is a real scumbag and married a slutty Republican lobbyist after her wealthy husband was killed in a car crash, really knows no ethical limitations when it comes to political attacks. His comments are cheap and show that the Ohio Democrat Party is willing to mistreat religious groups in order to score political points.

And just when I thought this story was finished yesterday, the Muslim Public Affairs Council, a group who has defended radical groups like Hezbollah and Hamas and has organized war protests with communist organizations, gave the story new life in the pages of the Dayton Daily News:

Charges of religious bigotry are surfacing in the state treasurer’s race after Republican Josh Mandel sent out a fund-raising e-mail that used the word “mosque” three times when talking about his opponent’s deputy treasurer, Amer Ahmad.

“This is just the latest example of the Republican party’s gross exploitation of Islamophobia to advance their own campaigns,” said Edina Lekovic, spokeswoman for the Muslim Public Affairs Council.

What is meant by “Islamophobia” isn’t a critique of how horrible women are treated in Islamic-countries or an intense theological debate. Mandel’s crime was simply mentioning the details about where Boyce pretended to announce unnecessary, new jobs he created for his friends. “Mosque” is not a dirty word, but Kevin Boyce’s actions as Ohio Treasurer are dirty.

This is the worst type of racial politics imaginable, and the Ohio Democrat Party owes Josh Mandel a sincere apology.

Corrupt Fundraising Practices, Treasurer Boyce Can’t Outraise Josh Mandel

June 11th, 2010 Matt View Comments

Josh Mandel reports nearly a 2.5:1 cash-on-hand advantage, even though Boyce has used the power of his office to push banks and financial services companies into donating heavily to his campaign.:

Building on his growing momentum and powered by his grassroots donor base, Marine Veteran and State Representative Josh Mandel (R-Lyndhurst) announced today that his campaign for State Treasurer reported more than $2.5 million cash on hand ? raising $393,000 since the last reporting period. Mandel, the challenger, maintains a nearly 2.5:1 cash advantage over incumbent Kevin Boyce.

?Today’s filing report is just another example of the overwhelming support we have received across Ohio,? said Mandel. ?Our message of integrity and fiscal responsibility is resonating with Republicans, Democrats and Independents who want real change in our state government. The fact that supporters so generously open their pocketbooks to help spread our message encourages me to work even harder,? Mandel continued.

Mandel earned his reputation as a grassroots campaigner in his first election for State Representative, knocking on 19,679 doors and wearing out three pairs of shoes. Continuing his energetic and grassroots style in the campaign for State Treasurer, Mandel has visited 80 of Ohio?s 88 counties and has traveled 87,418 miles across the state listening to the concerns of Ohioans.

Mandel has received more than 4,100 individual campaign contributions and this period received more than three times as many contributions as his incumbent opponent Boyce.

If Boyce wants to employ any more of his friends in his office, he better do it now as his time in office is going to be limited.

Josh Mandel Sends Feisty Letter Demanding Answers About State Street

June 9th, 2010 Matt View Comments

As the parties involved are being tight lipped with Ohio newspaper reporters, Treasurer candidate Josh Mandel is demanding answers from Boston-area State Street bank, a bank which California’s Attorney General called “crooks”, to ask questions about the manner in which  Treasurer Kevin Boyce awarded three contracts to them.

Here is the letter:

Letter to State Street Bank

CORRUPTION: Bank Hired Lobbyist with Boyce Ties Days before Landing State Contract

May 24th, 2010 Matt Comments off

Treasurer Kevin Boyce was only appointed to his office 5 months ago, but as Laura Bischoff reports, he has quickly embraced the worst kind of shady activity:

Boston-based State Street Bank won work worth $1.27 million from Ohio Treasurer Kevin Boyce’s office this year after hiring a lobbyist with personal connections to Boyce’s deputy treasurer.

State Street Bank was the low bidder on a subcontract to be the custodial bank for global assets at three of Ohio’s five public pension systems — a job that entails keeping track of more than $23.6 billion in assets.
No laws were broken and Boyce’s office makes a solid business case why State Street got the work. But just two days before proposals were due, the bank hired an immigration attorney with little experience in banking or lobbying to lobby for the contract.

In fact, Noure Alo’s only lobbying contract is with State Street, according to records filed with the Joint Legislative Ethics Commission.

Alo, who lives in Dublin outside Columbus, also appears to have ties to Amer Ahmad, Boyce’s deputy treasurer. They are Facebook “friends” and follow one another on Twitter. Their wives, too, are Facebook friends, and their children are pictured together on the social networking site. Alo and Ahmad’s wife attended Ohio State University law school together.

State documents also show that Alo acted as statutory agent for Five Rivers Partners LLC, a business in which Ahmad owns an interest. Alo contributed $500 to Boyce’s campaign last summer and attended a Boyce fund-raiser in January at the NFL Hall of Fame in Canton.

And this isn’t the first time Boyce has made sure his close friends are employed. For example, he hired a number of perhaps unqualified staffers who were children of Pari Sabety and Liam Shanahan, advisors to Gov. Ted Strickland (whoes previous jobs were at a water park and a zoo), the 22 year old daughter of the former mayor of Toledo Jack Ford , and the sister of a former mayor of Cincinnati Charlie Luken.

And Key Bank certainly sympathizes with State Street, as they had to host a fundraiser for Boyce almost immediately after receiving a contract from his office. Playing politics is just part of the business, I suppose.

But have no fear, as it becomes increasingly clear that the next economic disaster in Ohio involves the overly-generous/under-funded public pension plans, Treasurer Boyce will always make investment decisions with the state’s best interest in mind… as long as he and his buddies sufficiently cash in.

Kevin Boyce Better Ratchet Up His Shakedowns of Banks Quickly!

April 23rd, 2010 Matt Comments off

Because Josh Mandel is kicking his butt in fundraising:

LYNDHURST – Continuing his energetic campaign style and powered by his grassroots donor base, Marine Veteran and State Representative Josh Mandel (R-Lyndhurst) yesterday announced that his campaign for State Treasurer reported more than $2.16 million cash on hand — raising $317,655 since the last reporting period. Mandel, the challenger, maintains a nearly 3:1 cash advantage over incumbent Kevin Boyce.

“Yesterday’s report once again shows the strength, energy and momentum behind our campaign to bring integrity and accountability back to the Treasurer’s office,” said Mandel. “Our message is resonating with Republicans, Democrats and Independents from all across the state and the response has been overwhelming. I am very grateful for the outpouring of support in these tough economic times,” Mandel continued.

There have been loud rumors that Kevin Boyce has been actively job hunting this year because since this race isn’t on the Apportionment Board, Ohio Democrat Party Chairman Chris Redfern has already written this race off.

Here is Treasurer Candidate Josh Mandel with the Street Sweetie, Erin Burnett to discuss divesting from Iran:

It’s a nice thought, but the reason why Ohio pensions and others ended up killing the bill in Ohio is that cutting off investment to any particular country is quite expensive, but is still a futile effort as money is fungible. And it creates awkward situations, such as when Mandel ended up being criticized for investing in General Electric, which is a fantastic American company.

In addition, economic sanctions anywhere in the world have a poor track record of success. A commonly used counter example is when 24 states passed laws to divest from South Africa during the apartheid era, and economic pressure is widly credited for ending apartheid in 1994. However, South America was semi-democratic (answerable to an electorate of about 5 million whites), while Iran is an irrational regime with little sympathy for any hardships economic sanctions would inflict on Iranian people.

A big reason why American sanctions don’t work is that even though America is still the economic engine of the world (no matter how much President Obama would like to change that), we roughly account for 13% of the world’s merchandise exports and 15% of imports. So even if every state prohibits companies from investing in, and doing business with Iran- Other companies in the world can quickly fill the gap, while American companies suffer.

Instead, I think that increased, not decreased, economic engagement is preferable and more likely to improve the lives of the Iranian people without American military action.

This issue has fascinated me ever since Rep. Mandel and now-Senator Shannon Jones’ bill was introduced, as it’s an issue that divides the conservative movement with more hawkish think tanks like AEI and the Heritage Foundation on one side and with libertarian CATO on the other. It’s entirely possible that I’m being too soft and ideological on this issue, and a more aggressive posture like Mandel advocates for is necessary. Especially with the weak foreign policy posture President Obama recently announced.

Regardless, as Treasurer, Mandel will oversee the state of Ohio’s money, and with that fiduciary responsibility he has made it crystal clear that all investment decisions will be held to the highest ethical and moral standards. Considering that current Treasurer Kevin Boyce’s only consideration in investments is who donates the most to his campaign, having someone in that job as principled as Mandel would be a refreshing change.

Josh Mandel Takes the Gloves Off & Sucker Punches Boyce

March 15th, 2010 Matt Comments off

From Joe Guillen in The Plain Dealer:

State Rep. Josh Mandel is questioning whether Treasurer Kevin Boyce is waiting to sign a group of state banking contracts as a way to raise more money to win election in November. The State Board of Deposit, which Boyce chairs, recently postponed a decision to choose banks the state will do business with because it needs more time to review the contract proposals, a spokeswoman for Boyce said.

But Mandel, a Lyndhurst Republican running to unseat Boyce, a Democrat, said the new April 29 deadline seems suspicious because it is one week after candidates must file campaign finance reports.

The implication is the extra time will allow Boyce to raise more campaign cash from banks looking to get state contracts.

“As with most of the decisions Treasurer Boyce has made, it just smells really bad,” Mandel said in an interview. “At the least, it’s incompetence.”

Both candidates must file their pre-primary campaign finance reports on April 22, detailing contributions through April 14. The last filing in January showed Mandel with $2.04 million on hand, compared to Boyce’s $646,524. Mandel’s filing showed contributions from individuals working in finance, but it lacked large donations from financial corporations. Records show Boyce’s contributions included a $10,000 donation from a JPMorgan Chase & Co. political action committee.

Treasurer Boyce who has given jobs away as favors to children of Gov. Strickland’s key advisors, likes to spend 6-figures on office swag with his name on it, has shown himself willing to sell lucrative state contracts for campaign contributions.

It is an easy job to check the qualifications of financial institutions, but Boyce has to delay and do everything he can to shake the fundraising money tree, as Chris Redfern has pretty much written this race off. This delay tactic is common practice, but it is either arrogant or sloppy to put the deadline right at the fundrasing report cutoff.

Pfft… Who Needs Accurate Numbers in the Treasurer’s Office?

March 12th, 2010 Matt Comments off

Ohio Treasurer Kevin Boyce is so depressed that Chairman Redfern can do nothing to save him from total annihilation at the hands of rising conservative star Josh Mandel that Kevin can’t be bothered with accurate figures and amounts. And why should he? He only manages THE STATE OF OHIO’S MONEY. no biggie:

State Treasurer Kevin L. Boyce says he chopped salaries 10 percent in his office to save taxpayers $1.1 million year. Trouble is, it was really a $900,000 reduction.

Perhaps he was able to keep the salary low simply by not replacing some of the government bureaucrats who followed Rich Cordray for more money at the Attorney General’s office. Perhaps Boyce could have sent out yet another corrected press release with the headline: “Kevin Boyce Saved Taxpayer Money Through Inaction and General Slothfulness.”

Overall, state payroll has only decreased by 1.5%- an astounding number considering what happened to the economy.

Here is the well-known secret that reporters won’t write about but I will: Kevin Boyce has been actively job hunting for months. Hopefully, his next gig doesn’t require math skills.

Corrupt Kevin Boyce

January 28th, 2010 Matt Comments off

Joel Mowbray has a fantastic column on Kevin Boyce today at Townhall.com:

In the crucial bellwether state of Ohio, the Democratic governor has created a heavily partisan committee that may be able to tip the scales on the upcoming 2010 census.

What makes this situation particularly worrisome is that the man tapped to run the committee is current state Treasurer Kevin Boyce, who has an alarming history of playing fast and loose with ethics, from giving large donors lucrative state contracts to burning through taxpayer money for self-promotion.  And that’s just in the one year since he took office.[...]

Ohio’s Complete Count Committee—which the Census Bureau spokesperson described as a “full partner”—is headed by the Democratic state treasurer, Kevin Boyce, who has a disturbing history of ethical lapses.  His transgressions range from traditional cronyism to reckless handling of taxpayer money.

Here’s a brief highlight reel:

  • He at least raised the appearance—and possibly committed the act—of selling a lucrative state contract for campaign contributions.  One week after he awarded Key Bank a six-figure contract to process the state’s payroll checks, the firm’s officials hosted a $500-per-person fundraiser for Boyce.
  • According to the left-of-center Dayton Daily News, Boyce has hired a spate of young, questionably qualified staffers, all of whose main résumé point seemed to be having a powerful Democratic connection.  Among them are the 24-year-old son of two key advisors to Gov. Ted Strickland (whose previous jobs were at a zoo and a water park), the 22-year-old daughter of the former mayor of Toledo (who also was years ago Boyce’s boss), and the sister of Cincinnati’s former mayor.
  • Also in the Dayton Daily News is this gem: “As Ohio’s budget swells with red ink, state Treasurer Kevin Boyce spent $32,469 in taxpayer money on promotional items such as water bottles, grocery bags and pencils and plans to buy another $47,457 in swag plastered with his name.”

Read the rest of this important story here. Elections do have consequences, and we must not allow this dirtbag to remain in the Treasurer’s office.

Is state money ending up in the hands of ACORN, thanks to Kevin?

As I mentioned before, I hate criticizing Ohio’s appointed state Treasurer, as, like clockwork, we will receive at least a few emails calling me a racist. But in the spirit of transparent government, this is inexcusable:

If you search for the “Ohio Treasurer” or “Kevin Boyce” on Google,  as of this morning (August 3), the first search result is OhioTreasurer.org. It is just fine for Treasurer Boyce to move to a .gov website, but with spending $80k on promotional items and with all that Key Bank money he is raking in, could Boyce not find an extra $9 to keep the domain name active?

The Boyce Bandit

August 2nd, 2009 Matt View Comments

The Ohio Democrat Party and appointed Ohio Treasurer Kevin Boyce are getting nervous. Not only has there been two awful stories about Boyce (here and here), but as unemployment in Ohio skyrockets well over 11%, the political winds against Democrats are starting to change.

They are especially worried about rising conservative star Josh Mandel, who posted “eye-popping” fundraising numbers against an incumbent who, if competent, would have raised far more from bankers and other interested parties:

Republican state Treasurer candidate Josh Mandel will report having about $1.3 million in cash on hand when his campaign finance reports for 2009 are released this afternoon.

The former Marine who served two combat tours in Iraq had roughly $460,000 in the bank coming into this year, and spent about $145,000 during the first six months of the year.

“We raised just under a million,” said Mandel, a state representative from Lyndhurst. “What I’m most proud of is that we have donations from almost half of the counties in Ohio, which shows our broad base of support.”

The eye-popping total for a downticket race will be raising the eyebrows of political insiders as Mandel has opened up a sizable fundraising edge over current state Treasurer Kevin Boyce. The Columbus Democrat has already reported having just a shade under $500,000 in his finance report already filed with state elections officials. The reports cover the first six months of 2009.

The Democrats are so scared of Mandel that they are sending their staffers out to follow Josh around at every campaign event, hoping to catch him in some “macaca” moment. I followed the guy today who they threw out of the Grandview Republican GOP Club Picnic while Rep. Mandel was speaking.

Do you know his name? As he said, he probably is an ODP staffer. But unlike the illegal coordination between Mr. and Mrs. Chris Redfern’s lobbying efforts, it wouldn’t hardly be illegal for the Boyce Bandit to be in communications with Team Boyce:

Rep. Mandel should know that it is a good sign when they send their staffers out over weekends they would otherwise have off to video tape him.

But my question I ask of you, my loyal readers, is: Am I allowed to criticize Treasurer Boyce? I have so much more to say about him, but I’ve already received emails calling me a raaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaccciiiiiist. In addition, instead of being open to an interview with me (which would be very much in the fashion in which I interviewed AG Rich Cordray), Boyce’s spokesbabe Jen House won’t return my email and blocked me on Twitter.

Therefore, I am officially accepting resumes for one co-blogger to write for RightOhio.com. He or she must conservative and officially black enough to criticize Treasurer Boyce, a black liberal. Please send applications to . Thank you.
