What the Heck is Cordray Doing in Franklin and Summit County?

This is bizarre and should raise serious questions:

Attorney General Richard Cordray has often bragged about his fundraising.

He has raised more than twice that of his GOP opponent, Mike DeWine.

Cordray is doing so well, it seems he’s giving money away.

Cordray, a Democrat, contributed $250,000 each to the Franklin and Summit county Democratic parties — thought to be the largest gift the Summit County party has ever received. He also gave $220,000 to the state Democratic Party, according to campaign finance reports filed this week.

The contributions have many scratching their heads, as it’s more common for candidates to get money from county and state parties — than to donate it.

”This is a whole new chapter in Ohio politics,” said Alex Arshinkoff, chairman of the Summit County Republican Party. ”We’re all rooting this on. Put me down for the Cordray model.”[...]

Cordray spent $775,798 in the reporting period ending in mid-April, with most going to donations to the state party and two county parties. He gave $250,000 checks to the Summit and Franklin county parties and $220,000 to the state party in February. He also contributed $34,000 to the Ohio Democratic Party’s State Candidate Fund and $11,000 to the Franklin County party’s State Candidate Fund.

In total, he donated $765,000 to the party’s funds.

With so much money ending from parties ending up in the campaign accounts for Strickland ($132K), Boyce ($30k), O’Shaughnessy ($85k), maybe alot of his money was immediately turned over to other state-wide candidates.

Maybe this is a really aggressive way for Cordray to use the fundraising power of the special counsel contracts for a future run for Governor? Even if he loses against Mike DeWine, I would think a county party would think still think quite favorably of someone who gave them an unprecedented quarter-million dollars.

What is Cordray up to?
